What to Expect During Your Ultrasound
The majority of ultrasound examinations take less than 30 minutes to complete. Depending on what area of your body is undergoing the ultrasound, you may be asked to drink water or not eat before your test. During the exam, you will be asked to lie on an examining table and the technologist will apply a clear, warm gel to your skin to allow for smooth movement of the transducer (probe). The gel also helps eliminate air between your skin and the transducer. The technologist will then move a hand-held probe over the area being examined. Using ultrasonic waves, the probe will send images to a computer and the images will appear on a screen for viewing. These images will be stored for further viewing by a doctor (radiologist) who specializes in analyzing ultrasound results. Your physician will be sent a report of these results within 24 hours (some exceptions may apply).
