Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

What happens during the exam?
Try to relax! A standard CT exam is simple. Our CT tech will:
  1. Position you on an exam table
  2. If necessary special breathing instructions may be given for you to hold your breath
  3. If contrast is ordered, we will insert a special needle in your arm or hand
  4. In most cases, you may wear your own personal clothing or you may change into a gown.

What is contrast? What if I am allergic to the contrast?
Contrast can be used either intravenously (injection) and/or gastrointestinal (by mouth) to make anatomical structures enhance differently. The enhancement helps to radiologist distinguish organs and better define different types of pathology. Fort Sanders West Diagnostic Center uses non-ionic intravenous contrast for all CT and x-ray procedures. Non-ionic contrast, in general, has fewer reactions.
